Morocco's water reserves exceed 10 billion m³, an unprecedented level since 2018

With available water resources now exceeding 10 billion cubic meters, Morocco is recording an increase of nearly 120% compared to the same period last year, an unprecedented level since 2018. This surge is largely attributed to the abundant rainfall recorded in recent weeks.

As of Saturday, January 31, 2026, the overall reservoir fill rate stood at 61.3%, according to official data, reflecting a sharp improvement in water reserves over just a few days.

While these rains have significantly strengthened the Kingdom’s water security, both in terms of reservoirs and groundwater, they have also triggered localized flooding, particularly in the Loukkos region. In Ksar El-Kebir, several neighborhoods were evacuated as a precautionary measure, and the regional directorate of the Ministry of National Education announced the suspension of classes until February 7.

Further north, heavy rainfall led to the temporary closure of Tétouan–Sania R’mel Airport due to adverse weather conditions.

Meanwhile, several of the Kingdom’s dams have reached, or are nearing, full capacity, prompting the relevant authorities to carry out controlled water releases as part of standard safety and hydraulic management procedures.
