Honoring Excellence in Water Management: Professor Jules B. van Lier receives the William Dunbar Medal

The esteemed William Dunbar Medal is presented biennially to an individual from a member country of the European Water Association (EWA) in recognition of exceptional contributions to applied technical advancements in the water sector. Sponsored by IFAT Munich, the world’s leading trade fair for water, sewage, waste, and raw materials management, this year’s recipient is Professor Dr. Ir. Jules B. van Lier from the Netherlands.

Professor van Lier is a full professor in Wastewater Treatment / Environmental Engineering and head of the Section Sanitary Engineering at the Department of Water Management at Delft University of Technology (TUDelft). He also holds a second position at UN-IHE, Delft, in the Netherlands. Having obtained both his MSc and PhD from Wageningen University, he has dedicated his career to advancing wastewater treatment and environmental engineering.

Professor Dr. Ir. Jules B. van Lier

Professor van Lier specializes in the field of anaerobic treatment technology, focusing on cost-effective technologies for wastewater and sludge treatment, resource recovery (water, nutrients, and biogas), and the reuse of reclaimed water for industrial and agricultural applications. He has authored or co-authored over 300 scientific papers and book chapters. Furthermore, he chaired the IWA Anaerobic Digestion Specialist Group between 2001 and 2009 and was nominated as a member of the IWA Fellow Programme in 2011. His TUD online professional education course on anaerobic wastewater treatment is highly regarded.

On May 28th, at the EWA/NWA Spring Seminar in Oslo, titled Shaping the Future of Water Management in Europe: Increasing the Value of Water Through the Revised UWWTD, Professor van Lier will receive the prestigious William Dunbar Medal. During the event, he will also give a presentation and be honored for his outstanding contributions to the water sector.
